Open almost any reference board and it's stills. Screenshots, product shots, type specimens, a wall of static rectangles. Which is strange, because so much of what actually makes contemporary design good has nothing to do with how a single frame looks. It's how the loading state eases in. How the menu unfurls. The timing of a hover, the weight of a transition, the way a title sequence holds a beat before it cuts. None of that survives a screenshot. You save the frame and lose the thing you actually wanted.
This isn't a niche problem for motion designers. If you work on interfaces, app onboarding, marketing sites, or anything with a click in it, motion is already half your job — you're just not collecting for it. Scroll a well-built product and half of what registers as "good" is timing you couldn't screenshot if you tried. The fix isn't complicated, but it does require treating video references as a different kind of object than image references, not a video link dropped into the same pile and never opened again.
Most people's actual system for motion references is a graveyard of browser tabs and a "watch later" playlist nobody watches later. That's not a system, it's a delay tactic. The reference gets seen once, feels useful in the moment, and then vanishes into a queue with forty other things competing for the same five minutes you never find. By the time you need it — mid-project, arguing about how a drawer should open — you remember that it existed and nothing else about it.
Stills win by default, not by merit
The reason your board is 90% static images isn't that motion matters less. It's that stills are frictionless to save and video is not. A screenshot is one file. A video reference is a URL, a scrub bar, and a moment you have to relocate every time you want to look at it again. Saving tools are built around images, so images are what accumulate — the path of least resistance wins, quietly, over months, until you look up and realize your "design inspiration" only covers the half of design that holds still.
The result is boards that are great at colour, type, and layout and useless the moment someone asks "how should this transition feel." You end up designing motion from memory or from whatever the last project happened to do, instead of from an actual library of things you liked. And memory is a bad source for this specifically because motion is hard to recall accurately — you'll remember that a transition felt "snappy" or "smooth," but not the actual timing, easing, or sequence that produced the feeling, which is exactly the information you need to rebuild it.
Grab the frame, but never grab only the frame
A frame grab from a video is a fine starting point — it's searchable, it renders instantly, it fits next to your other images. The mistake is stopping there and treating it like a normal still. A frame from a transition tells you almost nothing about the transition; you've captured the destination, not the journey. Two very different animations can end on an identical final frame, so the still, on its own, tells you nothing about which one you actually meant to save.
Pair every frame grab with a sentence of what happened around it: what it eased from and into, roughly how long it took, what triggered it. "Card lifts and tilts 4° on hover, springs back on release, ~200ms" is worth more than the frame it's attached to. If you can grab two or three frames from key points in the motion — start, midpoint, end — even better; a short sequence of stills does a surprising amount of the work a full clip would, at a fraction of the storage and none of the scrubbing.
Save the timestamp, not just the video
A bookmarked YouTube link with no timestamp is where motion references go to die. You'll never scrub a forty-minute reel again to find the eleven seconds that mattered, and you both know it — that's why the link never gets reopened. If a source supports it, link the exact second — most platforms let you append a time parameter to the URL, and plenty of design sites and Twitter/X threads already do this for you automatically when you copy a link mid-playback.
If the platform doesn't support deep links, note the timestamp in the description field next to the link: "2:14 — the search bar expansion." It costs five seconds while the moment is fresh in your head and saves you the entire re-watch later, when you have far less patience for it. Future you is not going to rewatch a whole film to find eleven seconds; future you is going to read the note or give up and design something worse from scratch.
Put the motion into words, on purpose
This is the part people skip because it feels like extra work, and it's the part that actually makes a motion reference usable. A short, specific description does more than a saved link ever will, because it's the only part of the reference you can scan at a glance and the only part a teammate can read without opening anything. It's also the only part that shows up in a search later — nobody's video player indexes "the bit where the cards fan out."
Build a small personal vocabulary and reuse it: ease-in vs. ease-out, overshoot, stagger, cross-fade, whip pan. You don't need animator-grade precision — "snaps in fast, settles slow" is enough to be useful later. What matters is that the words are there at all, sitting next to the visual, instead of locked inside a video only you remember watching. Consistency matters more than vocabulary size: if you always call the same effect a "stagger" instead of switching between "stagger," "cascade," and "sequential reveal," your future self can actually search for it and trust the results.
A motion reference you can't describe in one sentence isn't a reference yet. It's a video you liked once.
Give motion its own cluster, not a tag buried in the general pile
If your stills are grouped by feeling — colour here, type there, layout somewhere else — motion deserves the same treatment rather than getting scattered one-per-project across boards that are mostly about something else. A cluster of six or eight motion references, each with its frame grab, its timestamped source, and its one-line description, becomes something you can actually hand to a teammate before a transition gets built. Without that grouping, motion references just dissolve into the noise of everything else you've saved, and nobody, including you, goes looking for them.
Know which format earns its place
Not every motion reference needs the same treatment. A short interface interaction — a toggle, a hover state, a menu opening — is often better captured as a looping screen recording or GIF, because the whole point is the loop; a still plus description loses the rhythm that makes it worth saving in the first place. A film reference or a longer motion-graphics sequence is the opposite case: the timestamped link plus a written description usually beats trying to re-encode ten seconds of someone else's footage. Match the format to what you're actually trying to remember — the loop, or the moment — instead of defaulting to whichever is easiest to grab in the next five seconds.
Revisit it like you would any other reference
Static boards get pruned and regrouped over time, at least the good ones do. Motion references deserve the same maintenance, and usually get it less, because reopening a video costs more attention than glancing at a thumbnail. Set the same bar you'd use for a still: if you can't say, in one line, why this clip is on the board, cut it. A pile of half-remembered video links isn't a reference library, it's a watch-later list that never gets watched later — and you already have one of those.
